Tempt My Tummy Tuesday… How can you tell it’s a good cookbook?

by Lisa on January 5, 2009

Hello everyone and welcome to Tempt My Tummy Tuesday. My sister, Lana, and I co-host this blog carnival. We share recipes, kitchen and cooking tips, restaurant reviews, and anything food related that you want to share. You know the rule of a blog carnival, please mention the blog or TMTT in your post and link back to us. Don’t forget to use Mr. Linky, down below.
(If your post was DELETED, go HERE for an explanation.)

I am so excited about today’s post. I discovered this treasure, while I was visiting my parents, during Christmas. Mom was looking through her cookbooks to find a pie recipe. I got a glimpse of this cookbook and knew right then, that I would share it with my TMTT ladies.

My mother obtained this cookbook, while taking her Home Economics course, during her Senior year of High School. (That would be 1963.) Yes, that is a RUBBER BAND holding the book together. I love that it is tattered and torn, with drippings of who knows what sauce or ancient drop of melted oleo. Apparently at some point, mom decided to write the dates, next to the recipe, when she made it. For instance, I included the page for “Lemon Meringue Pie“. I love that you can read, faintly in a green ink, the words, “very good”, to remind herself that this is the one she likes. I note dates as far back as 1970, and as recent as September 2008. I am sure that I have benefited, on many occasions, from this recipe!

So, I think it goes without saying, this is a good cookbook. Of course, my mom is a wonderful cook. She always out does herself, when the family is together. Her touch, brings these recipes to life.

Some of you may remember my “Ode to Betty Crocker” post. If you were not participating in TMTT, at that time, HERE is the link. It highligts a copy of my Grandmother’s 1969 Betty Crocker Cookbook. That is fun, as well.

Do you have a favorite cookbook? Is there a fun story about a cookbook, you found?
I would love for you to tell me about it.

I am submitting this post for the weekly I am Blissfully Domestic meme.

I totally agree! My favourite cookbooks are the more ‘old school’ ones of our Mothers and Grandmothers days. All of those stains and history shows how much it was used.

I admit, I also love cookbooks with big beautiful pictures. Sometimes just to drool over withouth actually making anything!

I love old cookbooks, especially when the owner has written in them.

When they are older, I hope my children enjoy reading my comments in cookbooks. For now, my family teases me about how I always write “yummy” on my favorites.

That is totally cool! I have never seen a cookbook by Home Ec teachers…and it’s from 1963!!! I can’t wait to find out more!

I love old cookbooks… especially when they have handwritten notes! I can spend hours just reading them and like Felicity, never actually cook any of the recipes.

I think my favorite is the Mennonite Country Style Cookbook by Ester Shank. I got it as a wedding gift. Since then I have had to learn to cook gluten-free and have been able to adapt many of the recipes from that book.

My favorite cookbooks are the ones made by churches, schools and women’s clubs; real recipes by real people. I have one that is almost 30 years old, dog-eared, stained and written all over. It’s the best!

My mom has some that looks like that too! I love to look through them and see all the things that she made when I was growing up.

My mom had that EXACT same cookbook when I was little…she probably still has it. I love cookbooks that are created by church groups or PTA parents or whatever. You know…REAL PEOPLE food!

Hey! I am on Mr. Linky twice because it was brought to my attention that my first link didn’t work. The second one works so you can delete the first if you know how. Sorry! #10 bad, #12 good!

I am almost certain I’ve seen this cookbook before. My grandma has another one that she noted all over in the table of contents on what her new husband liked or disliked…the 50′s were so cute :)

Thanks for the recipe sharing – this is my first Tuesday with you!!

I love to read cookbooks. Every time I go to the library I get one. When my husband and I spend an evening at the bookstore I am in the cookbook section. So much fun to look!

Great new layout!

I love the old cookbooks with wonderful recipes our grandmothers used to make. I’m sure my grandmother’s strawberry rhubarb pie came from one of them.

I have a betty crocker cookbook that was my grandmas I think it is dated from the late 40's or very early 50's. The beginning tells how to be a good wife and what to do & not do. It's hilarious by todays standards! I am at work so I can't pull it out, but I also love that grandma wrote the same type of things your mom did!

My favorite cookbook is that one that my husband bought me when we were first married and it is the red Better Homes & Garden Cookbook with really all of the basic recipes you need to start off with. I always grab this book and actually just made some brownies from the book a few weeks that where so yummy.

shopannies January 6, 2009 at 11:20 am

I love cookbooks and always have but I love the ones that are down to earth and lots of time community based. However when I got married my husband gave me a present of several cookbooks, none of which I would I cook from and many that had ingredients that at the time had never heard the ingredients of. The sophistication of these cookbooks scared a bride enough to place them in the highest spot of the kitchen

*sigh* I need cookbooks like I need my eyes gouged out. LOL!!! I LOVE cookbooks….every year, I have to go through a thin them (I try to give away 3-5 per year)…..maybe a blog give-away?

Anyway, I read them like novels for ideas…but don’t know that ever really follow a recipe. Maybe I should start. :o

I, just in the last 2 years, inherited my mother’s 20 year collection of Southern Living Cookbooks. I haven’t even read them, but know they will probably be collectors some day. I also got some of her cookbooks from when she was a child. Fun fun!!!

Holy Cannoli, I had the same cookbook! A friend passed it on to me several years ago and I just passed it on to another friend last year.

My favorite is still the Betty Crocker cookbook that my Grandma gave to me. Seeing all her notes is a bit like having her right in the kitchen with me.

Hi everyone! This is my first venture into TMTT, but I love the idea and look forward to sharing. I am a bit late for this week’s post, but added it anyway! I look forward to seeing what everyone else has shared!

One of my favorite cookbook series is a new one I found. Williams Sonoma has a series of books relating to major cities of the world, and their cuisines. The books are gorgeous and filled with lots of wonderful photos of the cities and (of course) their food). I’ve got Paris, London, Florence and Barcelona and I’m really enjoying them!

Michelle January 10, 2009 at 9:04 pm

I just saw this on Angela’s website (Hello, Dahrlin’!) I love this idea. I actually just started a Tasty Tuesday section a few weeks ago and provided I can figure out the rules to this, I’ll try to remember to participate (do you send reminders? ;) ). Other than mentioning the blog and the TMTT and it being about food, etc., is there anything else I need to know? I read through previous posts but didn’t see any set of official rules aside from the may be deleted one. Thanks!

I want to love cookbooks. I seem to buy them, look at them, then forget them. I am a sucker for food magazines though. I cook quite regularly out of those.
Thanks for hosting, I love to see what everyone is making. And that there is another great source!!!!
