God’s Lemonade Stand

Lemonade Stand SwagI feel everything in my life is pointing to this one theme…..What am I doing for Christ, His Kingdom, and to change the world by sharing God’s love? In my previous post I wrote,

I am still not sure what my “YES” looks like.  What needs to change in my life and in my heart?  What has God put on my heart to do?  Honestly, I am not sure.  So, I am praying and asking Him to show me.  But, I do know this, I need to step  up and stop living an easy, comfortable life with no cost for the Kingdom.  That I do know.”

And here I am again.  Along with reading the Kristen Welch’s Rhinestone Jesus, Saying Yes to God, I am participating in a bible study of Nehemiah, A Heart that Breaks.  In this study, Kelly Minter wants us to ask ourselves “what breaks your heart?”   Nehemiah’s heart was broken for his kinsmen who lived in Jerusalem with broken walls and gates.  He had the desire to rebuild the city from it’s brokenness, restore the greatness of his people and show honor to God.  To do this, with God’s help, he encouraged the whole community to come together and, as one body, rebuild.  And so it was done.   He had a desire to do something BIG to honor God and to help people who had lost their hope.

Nehemiah was told by his brother: “The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame.  The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.” Nehemiah 1:3

Nehemiah’s response: “As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. ”  Nehemiah 1:4

ElleLet me tell you about an eight year old girl who recently had her heart broken for the people of this world and what she did about it.   Elle is a family friend.  She recently watched a video showing people in China holding their own bibles for the first time.   Elle learned how people in China do not have the ability to get bibles.  Bibles must be smuggled into the country, usually by missionaries.  Once the Chinese people received their bible, it becomes their most cherished possession.  Elle could not believe this fact.  Elle is an eight year old girl who LOVES to read her bible.  She loves God and wants everyone else to as well.  Elle was heartbroken to know others did not have the same privilege and freedom to own and read a bible at will.  So, she was moved to action by her heart and desire to help.

DYI lemonade stand

bibles for ChinaWhat does an eight year old girl do?   She sets up a lemonade stand to raise money, of course.  Elle learned of an organization which will buy bibles for $5 each and get them into China.  Her goal was $200 – 40 bibles.  Word quickly spread, at our church, about her mission.  The community came together.  Her ten year old brother built the stand. People donated homemade cookies, confections, crochet hats, scarves, bags, as well as children’s toys, and clothing all to be donated for this cause.  Others donated money, knowing they couldn’t help on the day of the sale.  The stand was set up  on the day of a neighborhood wide garage sale, bringing more traffic than normal to their home.  When curious garage salers stopped by for a cool lemonade and tasty treat, they soon understood the reason for her stand and  gave over and above the requested $0.50 requested for a cup of lemonade.

Did she meet her goal?  Of course!  She raised OVER $200. God was with her in the plan.  He answered the little’s girls prayer to help others.  I would dare to say Elle’s faith was strengthened this weekend as the stand was such a success.  But even more, all of the adults around her were challenged and humbled by the heart of an eight year old who has a  heart for the Lord and a desire to share His love to all the world….

Again….. what are you doing for the Kingdom of God?  What desire has God put on your heart to share the love of Christ? And, I ask myself the same.

Grace and Elle working the stand.

Let all that you do be done in love.   1 Corinthians 16:14
